On February 5, Gimnasio José Joaquín Casas enthusiastically joined the citywide Car-Free Day, an initiative that transformed our school routine into a powerful tool for civic education, environmental care, and the promotion of physical activity.
Pedaling for the Planet: Rolling to School
One of the highlights of the day was the ride on bicycles, skates, and boards, led by students from grades 9 to 11. From early morning, groups departed from strategic points in the city such as Unicentro, Porto Alegre, and Calle 140 with Carrera 9, demonstrating that alternative transportation is a real and healthy option.
This caravan was guided and accompanied by our Principal, Sandra Camacho, along with teachers Miyer Guerrero, Miguel Tolosa, and Luz Helena Ríos, who rode alongside the students, reinforcing community bonds and modeling an active lifestyle.
Road Safety and Energy in Motion
While the older students arrived on bikes, the younger ones were not left behind:
- Preschool and Elementary: Participated in a playful road safety workshop, learning traffic rules and the importance of respect on the streets from an early age.
- Super Aerobics Class: To boost everyone’s energy, once the cyclists arrived, all students joined a massive physical activity session led by Professor Carlos, who got the entire school moving to the rhythm of music and exercise.
Reflection by Houses: Proposals for the Future
Beyond physical activity, Car-Free Day became a space for critical thinking. Through the Houses, students developed workshops to analyze and reflect on current environmental issues. The goal was clear: generate creative and practical solutions, demonstrating that at José Joaco we nurture leaders who are conscious of their impact on the ecosystem.
“Participating in Car-Free Day is not just about leaving your vehicle at home; it’s about understanding that every small action counts in building a more sustainable and healthy world for everyone.”
We thank all the students, parents, and teachers who joined this day with joy and environmental commitment!
